Some coffee shops are worth the walk just for the block they sit on. Joe Coffee’s very first shop is on one of the prettiest corners in the West Village, and it still feels like a neighborhood spot more than twenty years later.
Joe Coffee
Joe Coffee started right here, on the corner of Waverly Place and Gay Street, in the summer of 2003. Jonathan and Gabrielle Rubinstein opened it with family in a storefront that used to be a dry cleaner. Joe now has over 20 shops around the city, but the original still has only a handful of seats and two benches out front where regulars sit with their morning cup. The house espresso blend is even called The Waverly, after this shop. Gay Street is one of the prettiest little blocks in the Village, so take your coffee for a walk.
Recommendation: A cortado made with The Waverly espresso.

Make it a West Village afternoon: grab your cortado, walk down Gay Street, and you are a few minutes from L’industrie and Claude Bakery. Know a coffee spot we missed? Tell us on Instagram at @untouristingg and we’ll go try it.
