Gotham Burger Social Club: Your Lower East Side Burger Stop

·

Some New York plans need a reservation weeks ahead. This one just needs an appetite.

On the corner of Essex and Rivington, Gotham Burger Social Club keeps things straightforward: smash burgers, fried sides, and a casual place to take a break from walking around downtown. If your afternoon starts in the East Village, here’s a reason to keep heading south.

The Food

The signature Gotham Smash brings together beef, grilled onions, American cheese, housemade pickles, jalapeños, club sauce, ketchup, and mustard. Expect a fully dressed burger rather than a minimalist patty-and-cheese situation.

The single starts at $9, the double is $12.50, and the triple—also called the Beastie Boy—is $15. For a first visit, the double is a reasonable starting point if you’re arriving hungry. Prefer less heat? Ask about leaving off the jalapeños.

Fries are $4.50, while beer-battered onion rings with club sauce are $6.50. There’s also a chopped cheese taco if you want to take your order in a slightly different direction.

The student-budget calculation: a single with fries comes to $13.50 before tax; a double with fries is $17. It’s worth doing that math before automatically adding every side that catches your eye.

The Space

Gotham leans into a roadhouse-inspired look, giving the space more character than a standard grab-and-go burger counter. The setup is fast casual, without waiter service, so think an informal meal with friends rather than a long, dressed-up dinner.

It’s a useful kind of place to have in your downtown rotation: somewhere the food can be the main event without the whole evening needing an itinerary.

The Location

You’ll find the restaurant at 131 Essex Street, at Rivington Street, in the Lower East Side. Delancey Street–Essex Street is the nearby subway stop.

Coming from the East Village? Make this your next stop after exploring the neighborhood, or start with burgers and work your way north for dessert. Our Spot Dessert Bar guide can help with that second part.

Gotham takes walk-ins only, so there’s no reservation to organize. That also means you should leave some flexibility in your plans rather than counting on an immediate seat.
