Mud: The East Village Coffee Spot That Started as a Truck

·

The East Village has no shortage of coffee, but only one spot here got its start on four wheels. Mud is the kind of place where you go for a coffee and end up staying for brunch.

Mud
Mud began as a bright orange coffee truck in 2001, when Greg Northrop and Nina Barott started selling their own blend in the East Village. The name comes from what Greg’s Italian grandmother used to call her coffee. Their permanent home on East 9th Street looks narrow from the sidewalk, but it opens up into a bigger room with a garden out back, and they serve brunch all day. It’s a short walk from the NYU dorms on Third Avenue, and the orange cups are how you spot a regular.
Recommendation: The Mud Mocha, with brunch if you have time.
